Willie Jones appealed a summary judgment entered by the Montgomery Circuit Court in favor of Ray Ruth, based on sections 25-5-11(c)(1) and (c)(2) of the Alabama Code of 1975. Jones, a maintenance worker at Flowers Bakery, suffered severe injuries to his left hand due to an accident at work. Jones later filed a civil action against Ruth, claiming that Ruth was responsible for his injuries by willfully removing a safety guard from a machine.
Ruth filed a motion for summary judgment, arguing that the settlement agreement barred Jones's claims. The lower court ruled in favor of Ruth, leading Jones to appeal. The Court of Civil Appeals reversed the judgment, stating that Jones's release of "all claims arising under the Alabama Workers' Compensation Act" did not include his claims based on sections 25-5-11(c)(1) and (c)(2).
