Carolyn Williams, employed as a licensed practical nurse by Valley View Health and Rehabilitation, was allegedly exposed to chemical fumes in her line of work which resulted in an injury. She filed a lawsuit against Valley View in June 2007 seeking workers' compensation. In 2008, Valley View sought a summary judgment on grounds that Williams' illness wasn't directly related to her work.
The trial court passed a summary judgment favoring Valley View and denied Williams's post-judgment motion. Williams then filed an appeal. However, the summary-judgment order did not provide any findings of facts or call out legal considerations, as mandated by Alabama code. Hence, the Court of Civil Appeals reversed the earlier decision and remanded the case back to the trial court for a judgment that complies with the law.
