The case of Matthew's Masonry Co. v. Aldridge was an appeal by the employer, Matthew's Masonry Company, around a workers' compensation matter. The initial trial court ruled in favor of the worker, Edward Aldridge, Jr., which asserted that the employee retained his right to treatments involving his right-knee, despite settlement agreements defined in the past.
However, Matthew's Masonry Co. disputed that the settlement agreement waived all claims for medical expenses in connection with either of Aldridge's knees, regardless of its relationship to the back injury. Upon review of the evidence, the Court of Civil Appeals of Alabama agreed with the employer. According to the unambiguous terms of the settlement agreement and the extrinsic facts in evidence, Aldridge had waived his right to future medical benefits connected to his knees. The Court reversed the decision of the trial court and sent the case back for proceedings which aligned with this perspective.
