Nancy McDuffie filed a workers' compensation case against Medical Center Enterprise (MCE), her employer, alleging that she sustained an injury during the course of her employment. However, MCE argued that McDuffie's injury did not arise out of her employment.
McDuffie was injured after clocking out of her shift, then she stayed on premises for her nursing clinicals for her RN degree, during which she fell and broke her arm. The trial court sided with MCE, deciding that McDuffie's injury did not appear to have resulted from her employment. The appeal court affirmed this ruling, concluding that the accident was not related to her work, but to her pursuit of education.
