Steven Kraselsky, representing his deceased mother Marcia Kraselsky's estate, sued Dr. David Calderwood and Huntsville Clinic, alleging that Calderwood's medical malpractice in treating Marcia led to her death. Marcia fell and sustained a vertebrae fracture and was admitted to Huntsville Hospital. After being discharged and readmitted due to cardiopulmonary arrest, she was treated by Dr. Calderwood, who later ordered Demerol, a medication Marcia had previously claimed allergy towards.
Marcia's health worsened and she died thereafter. Steven claimed Dr. Calderwood's negligent act of administering Demerol was a breach of the standard of care that caused Marcia's death. The trial court ruled in favor of Dr. Calderwood and the Huntsville Clinic, which the Supreme Court of Alabama upheld due to a lack of substantial evidence that the administration of Demerol led directly to Marcia's deteriorating health and death.
